Empower STEM Learning With Our FREE Maker Project In Ballarat Region

The Brainary® is collaborating with City of Ballarat to offer FREE 3-session programs for under 18’s across Victoria’s Ballarat Region in 2025.

The Brainary’s Regional Youth STEM Project funded by the Australian Government aims to support 12-18 year olds with their development of STEM skills by providing a hands-on learning opportunity with the latest technology.

The project has a strong focus on inclusivity and diversity within the field of STEM, aiming to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and inspired to pursue STEM in their future studies and careers.

Explore, design and experience your own worlds in virtual reality!

Join us for a 2hour deep dive into virtual reality with ClassVR & CoSpaces. Together with our STEM experts we’ll use virtual reality to explore sustainability and understand how it can help us build a better future.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be recruited as a Sustainability Officer. It’s your job to apply your understanding of sustainability with your imagination to create a better future.

Working with your fellow Sustainability Officers, you’ll build your future world in CoSpaces and then upload it into virtual reality headsets to showcase your work.

Design, Print and Build your new house!

In this 2hour session, you’ll learn all about sustainable design through a design thinking process. Working in small groups it’s you and your team’s job to design the Ballarat’s houses of the future.

We’ll start by working through the requirements of our new houses and then begin the design process. Once you’ve got a good understanding of your building, we’ll turn it into a 3D model with Tinkercad. Tinkercad allows us to quickly design in 3D and give us a 3D printable file.

Next, we’ll build our new dream home using Arckit, an architectural block building system.

Note: All 3D prototypes will be printed out and made available for participants to collect at the next session.

Time to take action!

In our final session, it’s time to build solutions to real life problems and learn about future STEM careers.

Working in teams as Environmental Scientists you are tasked with identifying local environmental problems that need solving. Using your design thinking skills from our previous sessions, it’s time to build & code a solution to the problem.

We’ll be using the BBC Micro:bit powered Climate Action Kits to take action! Keeping with our local theme, we’ll be joined by STEM experts from Ballarat who will give us ideas and insights into STEM careers right here in Ballarat.
