An Exciting Case Study!
In December 2024, Kevin Leach from The Brainary, traveled to Cunnamulla Library to run a series of STEM workshops, made possible by the The LBW Trust country library grant.Â
Our visit included hands-on STEM sessions for children, introducing new robotics technology, tech demonstrations for the elderly, and essential repairs to ensure the library’s robotics collection remains fully functional for future learning experiences.
Hands-On STEM Learning in Action
Kevin kicked off the workshops at Cunnamulla Library that were designed to inspire curiosity and creativity in young learners. Using interactive robotics, including the CoDrone, JD Robot, CMPSR, and NAO, participants explored coding, problem-solving, and engineering principles. These sessions were a hit, with children and parents eager to get involved.
We started a dynamic introduction to STEM with CoDrone, JD, and CMPSR. Patrons engaged in hands-on learning, exploring programming and basic robotics. 14 excited children (and their parents) dive into hands-on activities, experimenting with the CMPSR music programming system and JD Robot’s programmable movements.
Later on the sessions became more intimate, allowing one-on-one exploration of the technology and a successful repair of the library’s NAO robot bringing it on track, patrons were mesmerised by its dance routines and interactive features that they experienced firsthand.
Bringing STEM to the Wider Community
Beyond the library, Kevin expanded the reach of STEM learning by hosting a special session at the local hospital for aged care patients. This initiative gave older generations insight into the robotics and digital technology their grandchildren are engaging with, sparking discussions about innovation and the future of learning. Former musicians in the group were particularly intrigued by the CMPSR’s music programming capabilities.
In addition, a session for the library’s iPad user group provided older attendees with an introduction to robotics, allowing them to see firsthand the technology inspiring younger generations.
A Successful Visit
The success of this visit underscores the importance of accessible STEM education in regional communities. With plans to expand robotics offerings and continue fostering engagement through technology, Cunnamulla Library is well on its way to becoming a hub for innovation and learning.
A big thank you to Tammy Hickey and the Cunnamulla Library team for their warm welcome and dedication to making STEM education a priority. We look forward to supporting future workshops and seeing how the community continues to grow in the world of robotics!
