Mighty Writer is an innovative literacy resource designed to help children develop essential writing skills, particularly in early education settings. It provides a hands-on, visual approach to teaching writing and storytelling.

Mighty Writer complements existing teaching techniques, allowing teachers to support and nurture their pupils to develop core skills of speaking, creating and structuring sentences and writing in a range of genres. Unique in its fun approach to teaching complex ideas, children will gain confidence with ease.

Mighty Writer is designed to be used across year groups throughout reception, year 1 and year 2, to promote a consistent approach to learning to write. It is also an excellent learning tool for those who have English as an Additional Language (EAL) or Special Educational Needs (SEN), and can be used for intervention up to year 7.

The Mighty Writer set is centred around a large mat, that can either be laid on the floor, or hung on the wall, making it easy for children to gather around and use as a group.

Mighty Writer simplifies the process of learning to write. Making complex ideas such as punctuation, vocabulary and sentence structure completely straightforward and interesting, children are more motivated than ever to learn. This process leads to becoming a competent, confident and independent writer, with promise for long-lasting progress and achievement in literacy.

Mighty Writer is both a physical and visual resource, which makes it incredibly engaging in the classroom.

Initially, children can create a story using the image tiles alone. As confidence develops, sentence mats can be introduced.

Teachers can then demonstrate the use of sentence openers, conjunctions and punctuation. In addition, symbols to represent adjectives, emotions, verbs and adverbs allow children to visually digest the markers of good grammar.

Adding arrows between sentences will give them a natural flow, while children can be encouraged to revisit, amend and improve the story as many times as necessary.

The omission of pens and pencils gives children the security to try new ideas and practice new skills; there’s no off-putting level of permanence.

This kinaesthetic method of learning helps to easily ingrain complex practices. It becomes immediately obvious when children pick up their pencils to transcribe; the tactile nature of what they have learned will make grammar, punctuation and sentence structure blissfully simple to remember.

The result? Enthusiastic learners who are keen to write, with their work demonstrating comprehensive understanding.

The Mighty Writer resource allows for continuous improvement in the literacy of individual children, thanks to its versatile ability to scale the required knowledge base up or down, dependent on the task at hand. For this reason, Mighty Writer is particularly effective in engaging even the most reluctant writers, as well as children who use English as a second language, without failing to challenge the most able in the class.

The Mighty Writer Impact

Mighty Writer collected survey data from 40 UK schools that used the resource for at least six weeks in 2023 to assess its impact on literacy in EYFS, KS1, and KS2 interventions.

Nearly 88% of respondents reported substantial, significant, or even revolutionary improvements, highlighting remarkable progress or a complete transformation in literacy levels. Every participating school noted meaningful gains across all evaluated areas.

The findings suggest that Mighty Writer is a valuable tool for improving literacy and engaging young learners. Ongoing research and feedback collection will ensure continuous product optimisation.

Substantial improvements
Teachers say classroom engagement in teaching and learning literacy is vital as it helps pupils develop both decoding and comprehension skills, as well as a love of reading. Learning the meanings of new words is an essential component of early reading development. It plays a fundamental role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension. According to the UK government, “Planned and spaced recall helps pupils to retain the new vocabulary they have learned.” Mighty Writer has been proven to aid sentence recall. As students learn to create more complex sentences through their writing and oral language, this has a positive impact on their ability to understand what they read. No schools, in any category, reported zero improvement, meaning every school surveyed reported meaningful progress, in every area.
