Teachers view homework as an opportunity for students to continue learning after the bell rings. For many students, it’s often just a dreaded word. How can educators change the way students view homework while ensuring that they still benefit from the additional learning it provides?
We have created the Homework Pack to deliver best practices and fun strategies to solve the homework problem!
The Homework Pack includes:
Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs, 2nd Edition – examines the role homework has played in the culture of schooling over the years; how such factors as family life, the media, and “homework gap” issues based on shifting demographics have affected the homework controversy; and what recent research as well as common sense tell us about the effects of homework on student learning.
Solving the Homework Problem by Flipping the Learning – outlines why traditional homework causes dread and frustration for students. How flipped learning—completing the harder or more analytical aspects of learning in class as opposed to having students do it on their own—improves student learning. How teachers can create flipped assignments that both engage students and advance student learning.
Trevor Romain DVD: How To Do Homework Without Throwing Up – Humour, original music and a fun storyline provide practical lessons that teach simple ways to defeat the dreaded homework curse! Teaches good homework skills such as homework scheduling, eating healthy snacks, and more! When faced with issues such as death, divorce, bullying, fear and homework struggles, these great videos offer children concrete skills and ways to cope.
How to Do Homework Without Throwing Up – provides specific tips for starting, doing, and finishing homework—and maybe even laughing while they learn. Kids will also learn how to make a homework schedule, when to do the hardest homework (first!), the benefits of doing homework, and more—serious suggestions delivered with wit and humour because laughter makes learning fun.
Dr Playwell’s Learning Self Control in School Board Game – is designed to help students think about the consequences of their behaviour and distinguish good choices from bad ones. The game will also help children practice relaxation and self-control behaviours, learning that they can control their bodies as well as their behaviour.
Grade: Middle School
